With the coronavirus being declared as a national emergency on March 13, many local businesses and restaurants in the Smokies have been addressing concerns about the virus, and several have decided to close their doors.

One of the first businesses to close was Dollywood, who originally announced that the 35th season opening for general guests would be postponed until March 28. However, they later announced that the opening would be delayed further and they would be following advice of medical experts and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines to determine the re-open date.

Season Passholder Preview Day was still held as scheduled, featuring many newly installed hand sanitizer stations.

“The coronavirus crisis is unprecedented, and based on the ever-changing developments, we are constantly re-evaluating our options and hoping to open in May,” Craig Ross, Dollywood President said.

Ross continued, “We are looking daily at all of our options to present an exciting and entertaining 2020 season that is a great experience for our guests, but our first priority is the safety of our hosts and guests.”

“We need to focus on good health and praying for those who are affected. We know brighter days are ahead,” Dolly Parton said in a statement.

More businesses are announcing closures each day, and those many of those that remain open are reducing hours, updating policies or encouraging pick-ups only for food.

In times like these, it’s important to give a nod to businesses who are taking care of their people. According to The Mountain Press, Dollywood is planning to pay their employees for shifts they were scheduled to work while they are closed.

Old Dad’s General Store in Gatlinburg will be providing free breakfast and lunch to any Sevier County child who needs a meal during the school sequester Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit their Facebook page here. We are compiling a full list of businesses who are helping the community during the pandemic.
