If you’ve stayed in a cabin in the Smokies more than once, first of all, congratulations, you lucky person, you! Second of all, you may have noticed that most of them have similar features: Natural wood, black bear-themed decor, fireplaces and log furniture. And personally, I love it.

But if you’re someone who prefers going against the grain a bit, this list might just be for you.

Before we begin, it’s important to note that quirky doesn’t mean bad. In some cases, it means just plain awesome, unique, or insanely huge. In fact, we love quirky.

So without further ado, we will now proudly present our 2020 list of top ten quirkiest “cabins” in the Smokies:

10 – The Grand Orchard Lodge, huge luxury cabin that sleeps 104 adults

That’s no typo! This luxury lodge houses up to 104 adults. And at an average rate of $1,554, this place can actually be quite a bargain at about $15 per person per night!

This luxury getaway features massive windows, open gathering spaces and expansive ceilings. There are a total of 11 sofas surrounding the fireplace, eight indoor dining tables (with several more outside), a plethora of rocking chairs, two hot tubs and an indoor pool.

And in case any of those 100-something people are starting to get on your nerves, you’re only about 10 miles away from Pigeon Forge and one mile away from downtown Gatlinburg.

Whispering Waters is an upscale designed A-Frame chalet with a lofted bedroom and two bathrooms located in a secluded wooded setting near a stream. It’s close to downtown Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. 2 – Lil’ Red Caboose on the Creek in Bryson City

This is one of only a handful of known Caboose Campers in existence, and it’s a must-do for train lovers. Or anyone who loves a new experience.

Some items in this caboose were left to feel like the original experience of what it was like staying in one of these in the early 70s, while many other amenities were updated to make the stay more comfortable.

The bedroom has a queen bed, and the dinette table is able to convert into a large twin.  The kitchen is equipped with a toaster, microwave, mini fridge and coffee maker. The bathroom is small, but it does have a full shower and hooked up toilet. The caboose is just steps away from a creek and has a covered porch and rocking chairs.

1 – Cabin on the water, accessible only by boat, canoe or kayak

No cable, no wifi, no phone, no AC — no problem! And yes, guests WILL have to own a boat, kayak or canoe and paddle for about 30-45 minutes to reach this off-the-grid retreat.

This boathouse still has everything you could need with a kitchen area, fridge, two-burner cooktop, basic kitchen supplies and a water filtration system. The bedroom area has two full beds. There’s even a real bathroom with a marine toilet with marine toilet paper provided.

A double kayak is also included with the rental. This place takes unplugging to a whole new level.
