Since a lot of bars and restaurants have been closed because of 2020 lockdowns, I’ve been using some my isolation time to experiment with a few moonshine recipes in my own kitchen.
And dear reader, since today is Cinco de Mayo, I decided it was the perfect time to introduce this mini series and bring you my very first installment of “Moonshine Mixin’s.”
Now, I wanna start with a couple of quick disclaimers. These concoctions are loosely based on some of Ole Smoky®’s official recipes, which can be found on their website or picked up in-store. The recipes I’m sharing were simplified according to either what I had around the house or what I could find in stores during the apocalypse.
The second disclaimer is that I like to use rough measurements. Growing up, we always used a “pinch” or a “splash” or “a lot of” when cooking. Let’s just say the measuring cup in my kitchen doesn’t get used all that much. But I believe in freedom with recipes. Everyone’s taste is different, and you can easily adjust to taste with these recipes.
So now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to it. This recipe is pretty simple, and truthfully, one of my favorite drinks yet. But it’s always hard to go wrong with a margarita.
Moonshine Margarita recipe:
- salted rim
- 2 parts margarita mix
- 1 part Ole Smoky® original moonshine
- simple syrup to taste
- lime juice to taste
- pour over ice
- garnish with fresh lime
I was pretty liberal with the simple syrup because I like it sweet. If you like yours more sour, squeeze in extra lime juice and go easy on the syrup. It is what you make it!
Now, in case you’re wondering, there IS a Margarita flavor of moonshine that can simply be enjoyed over ice as well. But I like this recipe because it’s simple and more generic if you just have some “plain” moonshine around the house.
Enjoy responsibly, and happy Cinco de Mayo, y’all!
