Pumpkin spice season might be upon us, but our Appalachian queen Dolly Parton already has her sights set on Christmas with a brand-new Christmas album, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, as well as a new Netflix special, “Christmas on the Square”.
With the year we’ve all had, one thing is for certain – a Dolly Parton Christmas can never come too early.
When will Dolly’s ‘A Holly Dolly Christmas’ album be available?
Dolly’s brand-new album, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, was released on Oct. 2, 2020, and is available now on Spotify, Apple music, Amazon music and online at shop.dollyparton.com.
“I decided to call the album ‘A Holly Dolly Christmas’ because I always loved the song ‘A Holly Jolly Christmas’, and I thought ah! ‘Holly Dolly Christmas’ would be a great name for the album,” says Dolly in a video posted to Twitter.
Naturally, “Holly Jolly Christmas” is the first track on the album.
“I’ve never been more excited about a project in my whole career than my Holly Dolly Christmas album,” says Dolly in a statement. “I’m singing with some of the greatest artists ever on some of our favorite classic Christmas songs and a few new ones that I have written. I hope we all have a Holly Dolly Christmas this year!”
“A Holly Dolly Christmas” is Dolly’s first holiday album in 30 years. It was released with Butterfly Records in partnership with 12Tone Music and features five all-new tracks written solely by Dolly herself, with one additional co-write with Kent Wells.
Dolly’s brand-new Christmas album features a mix of Christmas classics as well as original songs. The album includes guest performances by some big-name artists such as Michael Bublé, Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon.
The album also features a song called “Christmas On The Square,” which gives us a sneak peek on her new Netflix special.
Dolly Parton shares Christmas memories
Dolly, along with some special guests, are featured in exclusive interviews about the songs on the new Christmas album in a limited series called “Christmas on the Front Porch”.
In one video, Dolly talks about the touching story behind the song “You Are My Christmas”.
In the interview, Dolly talks about her childhood and growing up with her siblings, and she recalls the Christmas when her brother, Randy Parton, was born.
“Randy was a Christmas baby,” Dolly says. “We used to cry for one of those walkin’, talkin’ dolls when we were kids.”
But instead of a doll, the Parton family got the real thing.
“Mama said, ‘Hey come here, we got you your own walkin’ talkin’ doll,'” Dolly recalls with a laugh. “‘He cries real tears, and he pees real pee. He’s like your walkin’ talkin’ doll.'”
So when she wrote “You Are My Christmas,” she wanted her brother Randy to sing it with her, along with his daughter Heidi Parton.

Dolly Parton’s ‘Christmas on the Square’
Dolly Parton is also starring in a new film, “Christmas on the Square,” which is coming soon to Netflix.
In the film, a woman named Regina, played by Christine Baranski, returns to her small hometown in the wake of her father’s death with plans to evict everyone right before the holiday season.
Regina receives a visit from a rhinestone-bedazzled angel, who reminds her of the true spirit of Christmas.
The film will feature 14 original songs, many of which will be sung by Dolly herself.
The film will star Dolly as the angel, Treat Williams as Carl Pellam, Jenifer Lewis as Margeline and Josh Segarra as pastor Christian Hathaway.
When will ‘Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square’ premiere?
Rumor has it that ‘Christmas on the Square’ was expected to come out in 2019, but due to a production delay, the premiere was pushed back to Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020.
The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 38 minutes. Netflix has not yet released a trailer for the film, but classifies it as “heartfelt, feel-good and inspiring.”
Of course with Dolly playing an angel, we would expect nothing less.
