It’s no secret that Gatlinburg is a tourist town.

Businesses and restaurants are always battling it out for your attention and vacation dollars, most of them trying to offer the best food, entertainment and experience money can buy.

It can be hard to compete with.

And in a town with such competition, sometimes you have to stand out from the crowd.

Dare to be different. Dare to … not give a damn.

Did you have a bad experience? Good, it’s all part of the plan. 5 stars.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Dick’s Last Resort.

Dick's Last Resort, the restaurant where they insult you in Gatlinburg
Dick’s Last Resort is famous for being the restaurant where they insult you. This one is located along the main strip in Gatlinburg but they have other locations around the United States including Pigeon Forge, Dallas, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, North Myrtle Beach, Panama City Beach and San Antonio (photo by Marie Graichen/TheSmokies.com)

How did the founders of Dick’s Last Resort come up with such an unusual concept?

Dick’s Last Resort started in 1985 in Texas. The website’s description of the restaurant’s origin is also a bit tongue in cheek, but the idea is that a character named Dick was “hard up” in the 80s and started a restaurant as his “last resort”.

Some sources say that the restaurant was initially a fine-dining establishment, which totally flopped.

So the story goes, Dick instead returned to his roots, and started a place where he could be true to himself.

“Is Dick real? Hell yes,” says the website.

And now we have a concept with rude staff, cheeky menu items and obnoxiously large cocktails.

And, strange as though the concept may seem, it’s been around for more than 30 years.

What to expect at Dick’s Last Resort

Looking through the restaurant reviews on Google is quite hilarious.

You’ll see reviews such as:

“The food was awful. Drinks were weak. The staff was totally rude … We had a blast. Highly recommend.”

And …

“I was treated very rudely. It was wonderful.”

The schtick to this restaurant is that they are “funny rude”.

I didn’t hear anything too harsh while we were there. They want to make you laugh, not make you cry. But it’s important to understand, it’s all part of the Dick’s Last Resort plan.

We had a few straws thrown our way, and we were urged to remember the tip line any time we had a request. Our bartender called the guys next to us “creepers”. Throughout the meal, staff will yell at each other from across the restaurant.

It’s abrasive, obnoxious and all in good fun, and certainly the kind of place where you will either love it or hate it.

But the main selling point of a place like Dick’s is the custom-insult paper hats.

When we went, they must have been out of the regular tall paper hats, because the ones we received looked a little “Handmaid’s Tale” to me.

And while I’m sure they have a stack of pre-written hats somewhere in the back, it’s still fun to ask your friends, “What does mine say?” and try not to pretend like you’re kind of excited to hear what you got.

Mine read, “Easier than third-grade math” in sloppy handwriting. My sister’s said, “It’s just a rash, eat around it”.

Dick’s Last Resort food menu and prices

At a place like Dick’s, you don’t come for the food. You come for the experience.

But, since you might as well eat, Dick’s serves American-style food and cocktails.

A strong majority of the drinks come in souvenir logo glasses.

Drinks include moonshine in mason jars, draft and bottled beer, wine, a variety of cocktails and the famous 45-oz Fun Bowl Margarita.

Food items include traditional Americana food with cheeky titles like Dick’s Huge 12” Wiener (a hot dog), the Crybaby Burger (vegan burger) and The Dolly (chicken breasts).

Prices range from $15.99 for a burger to about $20.99 for barbecue and ribs. It’s tourist pricing, but there are some options that I think are actually pretty affordable for the portion size.

You can view the Gatlinburg menu on Dick’s Last Resort’s website.
