How did the Smoky Mountains get their name? 

It may not be surprising, but they're named because of their smoky look 

The Cherokee called the mountains Shaconage, which means "place of the blue smoke" 

Some people think the smoke is from the mist rising from the streams 

But actually, the mist is produced by the forest itself 

Water is pulled from the soil into the plants and trees ... 

And then the water rises from the leaves, evaporating into the air 

The water cools and forms the famous  blue-tinged mists
