The plan to revive a historic site and beloved state park
When Hurricane Helene arrived in the Smokies, it unleashed a torrential hell that claimed dozens of mountain lives. Communities were wiped out because some mountain waterways had been rerouted.ย It was an unprecedented combination of storm and timing. It hit on the heels of what would have been, under normal circumstances, a pretty significant rainfall.ย
The mountains of Western North Carolina were the hardest hit, but East Tennessee was not spared. The swift-moving Nolichucky River, which runs through and alongside the mountains into Douglas Lake, swelled to 30 feet in some areas. That was 8 feet more than the previous known record. Bridges, roadways, businesses, and more were destroyed. You may remember images of people being evacuated from the roof of an upper East Tennessee hospital as the water rose.ย

What happened to the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park?
In the wake of all that destruction, it went relatively unnoticed that the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park โ which had been a state park since 1973 and a regional tourist attraction since the mid 1880โs because of the legendary Crockettโs fame โ was all but washed away.
It makes sense. As important as the historic site is, peopleโs lives and the necessary infrastructure to rebuild them takes precedence. But now, roughly 16 months after the storm, a plan is afoot to not only return the park to its former glory but to rebuild it and enhance it. It will be โSix Million Dollar Manโ style โ which ironically starred Lee Majors who grew up about an hour and a half away in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Who is David Crockett?
I feel like if youโve made it this far, you donโt need the Crockett deep dive.ย Born in what was the newly formed Greene County, Tennessee, Davy Crockett became a legend in his own time. He was a living person upon whom tall tales were eventually built. His father fought with the Overmountain Men during the Revolutionary War. And he moved his family to several locations in East Tennessee.
An accomplished mountain man and woodsman, David Crockett was indentured at the age of 12. It was necessary to help pay some family debts. To that end, Davy worked as a cowboy on a 400-mile round-trip to Natural Bridge, Virginia, now a state park.
In 1800, Davy left home at the age of 13 due to problems with his father. But he returned to his fatherโs tavern in Morristown in 1802. He helped work off his dadโs debt there and then struck out into the world.ย
Davy Crockett joined up with the Tennessee Militia, headed by future president and Crockettโs future nemesis, Andrew Jackson. He served mostly as a scout and a hunter to supply game for the soldiers in the Creek War. Crockett later joined the militia in Spanish Florida to help drive the British out.ย

His legislative career and death
Crockett was elected to the State Legislature in 1821 and the U.S. Congress in 1827, where he frequently butted heads with Jackson. Crockett was the only member of the Tennessee delegation to vote against Jacksonโs Indian Removal Act. Crockettโs fame grew thanks to a stage play, โThe Lion of the West,โ and his own autobiography.ย
However, his death in 1836 at the Alamo launched Crockett into American folk hero status, like John Henry, Paul Bunyon and Pecos Bill. Crockettโs legendary status โ and position in the public domain โ made him ripe for Disney-style myth-making. In the 1950s, there was a Crockett craze thanks to Disney movies, TV, and the song โThe Ballad of Davy Crockett,โ which was a massive hit for multiple artists.ย

What is David Crockett Birthplace State Park?
It wasnโt long after Crockettโs death at the Alamo that people began visiting the place of his birth in Greene County. In 1973, the area became a state park. Even before the floods, little of what was on display at the Park was original to Crockett. Mostly, it was replicas designed to give visitors an idea of what life would have been like in Crockettโs day. In fact, the exact location of Crockettโs birthplace is unknown. The spot was picked based on Crockettโs own memory of the Nolichucky River area โ โat the mouth of Lime Stone, on the Nolichucky River.โย
Prior to the storm, the park had a large campground, picnic areas, and several hiking trails, among other amenities.ย It was a beautiful spot. It still is, actually. Itโs a place where you could learn some history and soak up the natural beauty of the mountains.ย

The plan to rebuild
Now, state officials, partnering with the local community, are working to restore the park to its former glory and, in fact, make improvements.
โDavid Crockett Birthplace State Park is one of Tennesseeโs most meaningful historic sites, preserving the story of a figure who helped shape our state and our nation,โ said State Sen. Steve Southerland. โRestoring this park is about more than repairing storm damage; itโs about safeguarding a place that connects Tennesseans to their roots. This master plan ensures that future generations can experience the legacy of David Crockett in a setting that honors his life and contributions.โ
While a timeline hasnโt been announced, donโt expect the work to be done soon. Itโs hard to fathom just how much the storm changed the area. What wasnโt swept away was buried in mud and muck. Only a couple of buildings on the property survived; luckily, the old Stonecypher Chimney โ built by the family that bought the property from the Crocketts- survived.ย
โThe master plan is part of a long road to recovery, and we are encouraged by the proposal,โ said Park Manager Joe Nowotarski. โIt is a comprehensive approach to the parkโs restoration, and we are committed to ensuring that the visitor experience remains strong.โ

The plan includes the following:
- A relocated main entrance and new signage to improve visibility and traffic safety.
- An information kiosk with an after-hours keypad for secure camper access.
- A new visitor center featuring a museum, camp store, restrooms, a grab-and-go shop, and ADA-accessible parking.
- A rebuilt campground with RV and tent sites, modern amenities, and a bathhouse including showers and laundry facilities.
- A Stonecypher educational pavilion incorporating the original chimney from the historic cabin that survived the flood.
- A David Crockett replica cabin and homestead are placed above the high-water line for flood protection and elevated views.
- An elevated riverfront boardwalk trail above seasonal water levels, offering scenic views of the Nolichucky River.
- Four riverfront picnic pavilions are available for day use.
- A childrenโs water feature with a constructed rock and stream flowing into a shallow pool.
- A large pavilion with restrooms is located near the playground and water feature.
- A rebuilt boat ramp and kayak launch, with stabilization and regrading of the Nolichucky River to support watercraft access.
- A covered stage for performances and community events.
- A barn and animal/agriculture exhibit area to support educational programming.
- A โ50 Statesโ monument and scenic overlook celebrating national unity and offering panoramic views.
The Crockett Shoals Trailhead remains the only area currently open to the public, at the time of this writing. The park is located at 1245 Davy Crockett Park Road in Limestone, TN.

Other Crockett landmarks
If you are crazy for Davy, you donโt have to wait to walk a little in his footsteps. The Crockett Tavern Museum in Morristown recreates the inn his father ran in Morristown. It is open seasonally, closing for the winter, but it has several interesting exhibits.
Also, the Jefferson County Historical Courthouse Museum in Dandridge โ not the biggest museum, but it has several interesting local history objects โ has his 1806 marriage bond and a replica of his rifle. FYI, the Crockett Breakfast Camp in Gatlinburg is not based on Davy but on another mountain man with an interesting backstory.ย
