The true story of how a community became “Nameless”

Just about 30 minutes northwest of Cookeville, Tennessee, and about an hour-and-a-half east from Nashville, lies a town that goes by no name at all – Nameless, Tennessee.

The unincorporated community has less than 100 citizens and has had mixed stories about how it gained its incredulous name. But the main idea most of those stories have in common is that the townspeople could not agree on a name. In order to have a post office to deliver mail to and from, eventually they went with “Nameless”.

Viewing the different photos and videos of the town with the official title makes it even more comical and almost surreal. The “Nameless Volunteers” or “Nameless Fire Dept.” signs helped me understand how legit this little town is about the name.

When looking more into the community, I found that there have also been a couple of published books either mentioning or written about Nameless. One of them has become a bestselling read; “Blue Highways: A Journey Into America” by William Least Heat-Moon.

Throughout Heat-Moon’s 13,000-mile journey-turned-memoir, he takes the literal roads less traveled. And one of the backroads he stopped in was Nameless. He took the time to learn about the town (and other ones throughout his book) and chronicled his experience. The book was published in 1982 and his section on Nameless brings a very warm feeling to what old Tennessee represents.

The J.T. Watts General Store

In Nameless, you can also find the J.T. Watts General Store. The store’s doors closed in the late 1970s. But the children, James Davis and Hilda Jean Watts, restored the store and opened it as a museum.

Around four times a year, the museum opens to host a town party consisting mainly of Moon Pies, bologna and cheese crackers and Coke bottles. The tradition has stuck around since 2005. The store and the J.T. Watts Family Farm are also now part of the Tennessee Century Farms Program.

Nameless is rich in tradition

I think there is beauty to the indescribable name. Because even though the town is Nameless, the people who call it home certainly aren’t. Natives who grew up in the area would stay at the General Store from dawn until dusk. That was the hang-out spot. Those who have chosen to live and die in Nameless surely have a special love for the area. It’s a simpler kind of enjoyment that’s found in a town with less than 100 folks. It’s a community that has a lot of home-grown history within its few buildings and no corporate franchises in sight.

If you’re looking for something different from the typical East Tennessee scenic drive on the Cades Cove Loop, then Nameless might be a new change of pace for you.
