Dollywood will be closed from Nov. 1 – Nov 6, 2020 while crews make final preparations for the launch of their Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration this coming weekend.

Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas event is an award-winning event, having achieved the title of “Best Theme Park Christmas Event in the World” from Amusement Today for 12 consecutive years.

While crews have been quietly working behind the scenes since mid-June stringing lights on days when the park is closed, overnights and early mornings, the park needed a few extra days of downtime to fully transition from the Great Pumpkin LumiNights and Harvest Festival displays to Smoky Mountain Christmas.

According to Dollywood’s Events Manager Matt Young, it’s no easy feat hanging up over 5 million Christmas lights while simultaneously preparing for fall events and offering park-goers an uninterrupted experience.

“We started in mid-June full force with our lighting crew,” says Young. “We start at night and keep hanging lights on days we are closed, overnights and early mornings all the way until we open for Christmas.”

The entire process takes almost 5 months from start to finish to install each year.

“When you come to Dollywood during Christmas, you should know that we are still offering all the lights and decorations that create that Christmas experience,” says Young. “We want you to come to the park and take a break from all the craziness going on in the world. Create memories worth repeating and fun times with family.”

Is Dollywood open on Thanksgiving and Christmas?

Dollywood will reopen on Nov. 7, 2020 to kick off their 2020 Christmas season.

The park will be on a reduced holiday schedule with closures currently scheduled for most Mondays and Tuesdays from Nov. 9 – Dec. 15.

However, Dollywood will be open the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, 2020. Dollywood is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

On weekdays, except for those days mentioned above, Dollywood is open from 2 pm-9 pm and on weekends from 11 am-9 pm.

Dollywood is set to close for the season on Jan. 3, 2021.

Guests are strongly encouraged to make reservations to guarantee entry, although they are not required.

What’s new this year at Dollywood’s Christmas celebration?

New this year, guests will be able to enjoy a “Merry and Bright” fireworks display synced to Christmas carols each Friday and Saturday night with multiple viewing areas throughout the park.

Also new this year, the DreamSong Theatre will feature a new show, “Heart of the Holidays,” featuring members of Dolly Parton’s extended family sharing stories and showcasing songs from her new Christmas album along with classic holiday favorites.

“Rivertown and Craftsman’s Valley are going to get a new look this year – it’s been redesigned to have a more specific feel and its own theme,” said Young. “I don’t want to share exactly what that is right now because we want you to come back and see it first hand and experience it for yourself.”

Detail-oriented park goers may also appreciate an all-new lighting technology being used to wrap the trees this year.

“We have a new type of light that we are putting on the trees … it’s a thicker gauge wire that puts out more lumens of light. They are called ‘expandables’ and they actually grow with the tree.”

And of course most of your favorite Smoky Mountain Christmas attractions will be returning this year including Glacier Ridge and the 50-foot Christmas Tree.

Will there be indoor Christmas shows at Dollywood this year?

Indoor shows, including “Christmas in the Smokies” and “Kingdom Heirs Christmas” will also be making their return this year, despite earlier speculations that this would not be possible.

Every other row will be closed, and parties will be asked to sit together with at least three seats between your group and the other groups on either side.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early since seating will be limited.

Dollywood reserves the right to close shows if needed should conditions prove to be unsafe.

Guests are encouraged to check the daily schedule on the Dollywood website for the latest information on show times.
